CHAMBER CHAT Water Fest at harbor set To the editor: Farmers are the backbone of this great nation. They provide an invaluable service for which they deserve more respect and dignity than they currently enjoy. Above all else, farmers are our greatest land stewards. They conserve the land bequeathed by our ancestors for our present enjoyment and occupation.

Responsible land use distinguishes the State of Wisconsin from her neighbors. On Monday, April 10, Oconto County Land Conservation Committee approved a variance to their regulations that will allow and Dairy, a multi-million dollar farming outlet based in Pound, to construct a manure storage facility on top of the watershed that feeds much of the marshland north of the City of Oconto. Similarly constructed facilities in Kewaunee and Manitowoc Counties have raised environmental concerns in those communities. Cattle produce waste and that waste must be stored somewhere, that much is understandable. Is it not also rational to expect a higher standard of protection and reg- ulation for our treasured and disappearing freshwater wetlands? Our water is a life source, not only for humans, but for our livestock and the endangered flora and fauna that thrive in these ecosystems.

I call on and DDairy to release their construction plans for their proposed facility, as well as any contingency plans in the event of a leak. This kind of transparency will allow the public to hold and Dairy responsible should, God forbid, our water become contaminated.
